Paper, collage images, distress inks, fibers, found objects, beads, feathers

For Russell's Birthday card I wanted it to have a fantasy storybook feel, since it fits his personality. The card is thick, almost like a book cover. I chose a patterned, textured, green paper and faux book binding to help the feel. I also tore part of the paper to look as if maybe the cover had been torn off to reveal part of the story.

Inside, the theme continues with words like "Magic", and "Adventure". A wizard, and some of my personal favorite fantasy images: Owls. In my daydreams I have a friend owl with magical powers named Honak. And I used some of his fallen feathers in this piece.

If you look closely at the tags you will see the initials R and F, and repeated again in typewriter keys tried to the fibers of the tag. The other tag has a birthday message and birthday images to lighten the piece. And of course, lots of fibers and beads. Everything is heavily distressed. I usually use a 5 step process for distressing my pieces. I want things to feel as if they are something that has been loved and kept, a treasure that was perhaps forgotten in the hurried rush of real life that had once again been found.
